Friday, April 18th
I read an article in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine April 2025 Issue about a town called Ennis Texas that is known as the Bluebonnet Capitol of Texas. They had a festival the week earlier, but we had comitted to attending a retreat with the Dominican Nuns that weekend and going on easter break gave us more time to stay without missing any days at the daycare center. The drive is over 6 hours each way so additional time there is better. The bluebonnet trails were supposed to be active for the whole month so our chances of catching the blooming near its prime was high.
We planned to leave around 8am in order to arrive in time for the "Good Friday" celebration at 3pm, but had to return to the house to get a charger cord and missed a turn on Highway 77N that got us to I35 further south of Waco than planned. Waco traffic was stop and go due to construction and heavy traffic so we didn't get to Ennis in time for the Good Friday program.
We checked in at La Quinta Hotel, rested a little bit, then tried the Blue Bonnet South Trail since it started near the hotel area. The distance to the first turn, Old Telico Road, was further than the map implies, but we eventually found it and started seeing some pretty good views of bluebonnets and indian paint brushes in the pasteurs near the road along the route.
We discussed eating dinner out, but decided to eat the fish leftovers and some of the fruit salad we had brought with us. I was a little tired from all the driving. Saturday, April 19th After breakfast at La Quinta we headed along the west trail with the intent to check out the listed parks. I missed the turn for W. Baldrige St. and ended up following Countryclub Road where we saw numerous patches of blueblonnets along the road in the pasteurs for the various ranches along the way. Eventually we ended up at the entrance to a ranch, so we turned around and went back to find Lake Clark Park.
There were a few people fishing from the pier there. They weren't getting any catches but I found out where to buy night crawlers, Ace Hardware Store. We then went to the Kachina Prairie Park and looked at the flowers there. Marilou was scared of snakes, but I walked the short trail. Later I got her to come see the Bison Statue. There were Eagle Scout markers near some of the flowers, but the numbers didn't correspond to the picture at the entrance and I wasn't able to find anywhere a guide to the identities marked.
We then headed to Bluebonnet Park. It was packed. Apparently there was a little league tournament going on there. There was a lot of barbecue going on there. We walked a short trail in the park taking some more bluebonnet photos.
We then ate lunch at the Bella Italia Restaurant. I had the Eggplant Parmesan which was very good. Took half of it home since it was a lot. We then found a hardware store and bought some worms. But when we got to the address it was called Main Street Hardware. We went back to Lake Clark Park and drowned some of the worms. Sunday, April 20th We ate breakfast early so that we could attend the Easter Mass at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. The church is pretty large and was full, but it was Easter Sunday. The priest was very nice and related well with the crowd.
We went to the Popeyes across from the hotel for lunch since it was Sunday and most of the restaurants were closed. The service there was quite poor also. Later we drove the north trail. The fields of flowers was a little more spread apart than the other trails but we still got a lot of views. The wine tasting was not availables since it was Sunday.
Next we tried fishing again. This time we went to the "Old City Lake" which was formed by a Dam constructed to provide water for the Ennis Railroad. We saw plenty of turtles and Marilou managed to catch two of them. I thought about turtle soup, but released them back. I also saw several water snakes swimming by, but didn't point them out to Marilou.
Monday, April 21st
We had the included breakfast, checked out, gassed up and started the long drive back to Corpus Christi.
